In video games, hunting supernatural beasts rarely takes the form of actual hunting. Among the exceptions to this rule is Folklore Hunter, an action game that is the debut project of Liquid Donkey Games, an independent studio from New Zealand.
In Folklore Hunter, events are viewed from a first-person perspective (FPP). The game's driving force is hunting creatures not of this world. In order to deal with each of them, we first have to conduct a kind of investigation and find out what kind of monster we are dealing with and what brought it to the territory, and then find a way to stop it.
All this is not easy, as we have to deal with such creatures as the horned Wendigo, the fearsome Moth Man or the Gnome. The hunts take place in handcrafted locations with an open structure, among which we find dense forests, cave systems, abandoned military outposts, dark catacombs or haunted churches.
Before we can directly fight a creature, during which we mainly use firearms, we need to locate it. Cameras that allow us to track activity in a given area, as well as traps set, prove indispensable.
Along the way we collect resources, such as additional ammunition, as well as meat and other useful items such as gasoline canisters, which we can use to set traps. When the hunt is over, we end up in our fortress, where we stock up on new equipment and prepare for the next hunt.
Folklore Hunter offers a story campaign in which we take part in specially prepared missions. The hunts allow us to explore the history of the cursed village, around which sinister creatures reign, as well as learn about the experiments conducted in biological laboratories abandoned by the military. In addition, there are Contracts, which are less extensive quests with random locations and puzzles, waiting to be checked.
The title allows for single-player or cooperative hunting over the Internet, with no limit on participants.
